Utah Zika case remains a mystery — CDC

“From what we have seen with more than 2,900 cases of Zika in U.S., non-sexual spread of Zika virus from one person to another does not appear to be common – this is the only case identified to date that has an unknown mode of transmission”, CDC spokesperson Benjamin Haynes told TIME in an email.

“Although it is not certain that these types of close contact were the source of transmission, family contacts should be aware that blood and body fluids of severely ill patients might be infectious”, the officials said in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The researchers also said their findings prove without a doubt that the Zika virus crosses the placenta from a mother to the brain of the fetus.

Twenty-two new cases were confirmed on Sunday in the upmarket Sathorn area of Bangkok, part of the city’s Central Business District, including a pregnant woman who later gave birth with no complications.

On tackling the spread of Zika virus, Zulkifli said over 200 mosquito breeding habitats have been destroyed during inspections by National Environment Agency since the first locally-transmitted Zika case was reported on August 27.

For regions without active transmission of Zika virus, World Health Organization also recommends practising safe sex or considering abstinence for a period of six months for men and women who are returning from areas of active transmission.

“It is essential that health care workers continue to apply standard precautions while caring for all patients, including those who might have Zika virus disease”. Such measures include wearing gloves, masks and other personal protective equipment.

A spokesperson explained: “Zika does not occur naturally in the United Kingdom, however, since 2015, the Public Health Agency (PHA) can confirm that there have been less than five cases of Northern Ireland residents diagnosed with Zika virus”.

Utah health officials have not identified the people involved in any way, but the Associated Press has reported the second patient was his son. The man had roughly 100,000 times the usual amounts of the Zika virus in his blood.

Rogers and those who will be assisting him with the five tests placed around the county will put a new testing kit out each Monday and turn the kits in on Thursday. No one else has tested positive.

Aedes aegypti mosquitos, the primary carrier of the disease, have only been found around the Columbus area, he said.

“I am concerned that despite being in the Assembly chamber answering questions yesterday, and having the opportunity to update the public on this development, the Health Minister Michelle O’Neill chose silence over providing clarity”. It has also been found in genital tract swabs and fluid inside the eye. “That’s why they pay more attention to dengue than Zika”, Watcharee told Reuters.

“But family physicians need to realize when you are talking about Zika virus in mid-September, what you say might not be true in mid-October”.

Although it’s perplexing that no one else developed an infection, officials say it’s hard for a retrospective investigation to fully capture all aspects of the son’s exposure.
