Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, left, poses for a picture with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during a ceremony to mark more signatories to the Paris climate accords at U.N. headquarters, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016. Oil-rich United Arab Emirates also ratified the deal, as did nations considered particularly vulnerable to sea level rise, such as Kiribati and Bangladesh.
With Wednesday’s event, in which leaders ceremonially ratified the accord, a total of 60 countries have joined the Paris accord but they account for less than 48 per cent of global emissions. To take effect, the agreement must be ratified by sufficient countries to cover at least 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had warned earlier this month that cooperating nations will have the flawless opportunity to vow their support to the agreements amid Climate Week.
The agreement has now surpassed the 55-country threshold it needs to take force.
Leaders from Kazakhstan and Poland have also informed me of the same intention.
What once seemed impossible is now inevitable.
“When this year ends, I hope we can all look back with pride, knowing that, together, we seized the opportunity to act for the common good, for a sustainable future and the protection of our common home”, he added.
“It is of great concern that the Republican nominee for President has advocated USA withdrawal from the Paris Accord”. Should these promises be fulfilled, the agreement will pass the second threshold and come into force.
He said European Union environment ministers will meet Friday to discuss a plan to ratify the agreement as a bloc, even though only a few of the 28 member states have approved it domestically.
Mrs May stressed that the United Kingdom was committed to the target of spending 0.7% of gross national income on overseas aid and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defence. This increase in greenhouse gases is changing Earth’s climate…
“In addition, we are set to launch our first ever Green Bonds in the first quarter of 2017 to fund a pipeline of projects all targeted at reducing emissions towards a greener economy”, he said. He urged people everywhere “to become warriors for the planet”. “It is expected that there will be a lot of investment opportunity for foreign investors during the US-Africa Business Forum, scheduled to take place next week in NY”, he said. It was adopted previous year in Paris. The Paris Agreement, a deal within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on greenhouse gas emissions mitigation starting in 2020, was adopted in December 2015.
“The potential carbon emissions from the oil, gas, and coal in the world’s now operating fields and mines would take us beyond 2 degree Celsius of warming”, it warned.
