Federal Authorities Charge NY, NJ Bombing Suspect

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, has been held in a Newark, New Jersey, hospital since being arrested on Monday with wounds after a shootout with police.

The charges assert the 28-year-old naturalized US citizen from Afghanistan, meant to “cause death and serious bodily injury” when he planted devices at four locations across New Jersey and NY, including the two in Manhattan. At the time, he was employed by Summit Security, a private contractor.
Noting that Rahami could face state charges in NY and New Jersey – in addition to federal charges – Bharara said, “We are not rushing against each other to bring charges”.
Rahami’s wife, Asia Bibi Rahami, flew back to the United States overnight, a law enforcement official said. Family court records show Rahami also worked for a security firm in Parsippany, New Jersey, in 2008.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch says the Justice Department intends in the “near future” to bring Ahmad Khan Rahami to NY to face charges in a Saturday night bombing there. He has been charged with five counts of attempted murder against police.
Also Tuesday, investigators disclosed that when Rahami was shot and captured, he had a notebook with him that contained extremist ramblings.

A woman who had a child with the man suspected of setting off bombs in NY and New Jersey has asked a court to give her full custody of their son.
On the brief form, she indicated that she was requesting full custody because the “defendant has been charged with police attempted murder and is now under protective services after possible terrorist related activity in NYC”.

Rahami’s father told reporters Tuesday outside the family’s fried-chicken restaurant in Elizabeth, New Jersey, that he called the Federal Bureau of Investigation two years ago.
