FBI probes claim of blast culpability on Tumblr

Millions of people living in the NY region received a cell phone alert this morning that named 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami as the man that law enforcement agencies believe is connected to the bombing that injured 29 people.

The bomb that rocked a bustling Manhattan neighbourhood contained residue of an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores. Police say more than two dozen people were injured in the explosion.

Linden police say Officer Angel Padilla went home Monday night, several hours after he was shot in the torso.

Mr. Obama said he had been briefed just before he spoke by the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, and had conferred with Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, as well as with Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City. That blast, at 9:30 in the morning, was caused by an improvised device or pipe bomb left in a trash can along the planned route of a race to raise money for the US Marine Corps.

The judge was also unpersuaded by federal defender claims that federal law enforcement is involved in detaining and questioning Rahami.

On Sunday, a team of five Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched an Uber driver’s vehicle that had been damaged in the Manhattan blast, ripping off the door panels inside as they examined it for evidence.

The New York City Police department released Rahami’s photo on Monday, and Mayor De Blasio said he could be “armed and dangerous”.

A short time after the explosion, just a few blocks away, police found another potentially explosive device, which looked like a pressure cooker with wiring, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.

The explosion occurred at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue.

Police did not immediately release the attacker’s name, and CNN hasn’t independently verified ISIS’ claim that he was linked to the group.

“That’s what worries us: Was this some kind of test run, not just of the devices, but also of the surveillance in NY and the response?” the official said.

The recovery of the second device provides investigators with a host of potential leads, from the phone and other materials inside the homemade bomb to the pressure cooker itself – including possibly determining when and where it was purchased – to any possible fingerprints on the device, its components or the tape that held it together.

The bomb went off Saturday in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, injuring 29 people.

The former secretary of state noted that the Islamic State militant group had asserted responsibility for the stabbings of nine people Saturday inside a mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, about 70 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The FBI’s bomb squad then deployed a robot to examine the devices. Some of the video is not helpful because the cameras are either too far away or the footage is too grainy to tell what’s on it, the official said.

The race was canceled after the explosion.

Earlier Sunday, the state’s governor said almost 1,000 police officers and National Guard troops would be sent to bus stops, train stations and airports, as investigators with the New York Police Department, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked to identify the person or people responsible for the explosion.

A law enforcement official says the Afghan immigrant wanted in connection with explosions in New York City and New Jersey has been taken into custody following a shootout with police officers.

Experts said a large amount would be required to create a blast like the one Saturday night, as well as an accelerant or other ignitor.

The restaurant, First American Fried Chicken, is owned by Rahami’s father and has also employed some of his brothers, Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said. Earlier, five people were being questioned by the FBI but none has been charged and the investigation was ongoing.

The bombs used in the Boston Marathon bombing were built using instructions that the pair of brothers behind the attack found in al Qaeda’s “Inspire” online magazine.

“Tonight, New York City experienced a very bad incident”, de Blasio said at a news conference near the scene in Chelsea.
