Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane off in different directions at World Cup

Ryan McDonagh, who scored shorthanded, led the Americans with two goals in the tournament. If we don’t get to where we want to get, we’ll be in the same boat. Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins winger Phil Kessel was left off the US team and made light of that on Twitter on Tuesday night after the Americans lost to Canada. The 2010 team gave new life to a team that won one game at the 2006 Olympics. Even with Patrick Kane, Joe Pavelski and Zach Parise on the roster, the Americans failed to generate scoring chances and general manager Dean Lombardi and coach John Tortorella had to answer for why they chose size and physicality at the expense of more skill.

“It’s not to say you overlooked them, but I think even the connotation was Europe, so it wasn’t a real team”, Lombardi explained, per CSN Chicago.

Lombardi said that the 3-0 loss to Europe put the US behind the “proverbial 8-ball” that felt like a boulder.

A 4-1 success against Team Europe ensured Canada completed the group stage with a flawless record. “It kind of gave us some breathing room”.

The team that was built to beat Canada didn’t beat anyone. They at least had a little push back and played with a little more pride, but the end result was the same.

Tortorella said he had a few ideas about changes that could be made but preferred to keep those to himself. When they consistently fall short on the biggest stage, and appear to be backsliding, it’s a huge problem. That part we got down. “It certainly isn’t good”.

“I know what it’s like to feel pressure”, he continued, “because I played in Sochi, but Canada has many experienced players, so I don’t think home pressure will be a problem for them”.

Coming into Monday night, Team Russia needed to beat Team North America to stay alive in the 2016 World Cup.

Lombardi says United States couldn’t match Canada’s skill and talent level, so he tried to win another way.

“I think the USHL games are really, really important”, said Danton Cole, the U-17 coach who played four years for Michigan State before a 318-game National Hockey League career with the Jets, Lightning, Devils, Islanders and Blackhawks.

“Atmosphere [is] going to be unbelievable”. “It’s gonna be a great match to play, to be involved in, to be in the stands and be able to watch”.

The Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin scored in the third period for Russian Federation, and the Blue Jackets’ Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves. But how can you argue with a system that has produced perhaps the most dominant juggernaut in worldwide hockey history – the Soviet’s Big Red Machine included? I think we’re going to be remembering this for a long time.

Power play goal, 15:19 TOI, 4 SOG, 58.87 score-and-venue adjusted 5v5 CF%, 47.31 score-and-venue adjusted 5v5 FF% in 4-3 loss to Czech Republic.

Former Red Wing Valtteri Filppula was a minus-2 in 17:36. It’s so easy. It’s so easy to start chucking dirt on us when things are going bad. “Just now, a little bit disappointing”.

But had to play without their most veteran forward, future Hall of Famer, Pavel Datsyuk.

Canada-Russia is hockey’s most storied rivalry and Saturday’s semi-final shapes up as another classic with Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, the sport’s two biggest names, set to lead their respective teams into battle.

Bobrovsky received help from the post to deny Mikael Granlund’s one-timer and preserve a scoreless tie early in the second.

Telegin, who has become known for his shot-blocking abilities in this tournament, picked up a Vadim Shipachev feed and powered around Rask for his first of the tournament at 5:01 of the second.

Malkin scored his first of the tournament at 3:39 of the third period.

Lombardi has seen his Kings team rally from a 3-0 series deficit to win a playoff series. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but Canada is making a mockery of global competition.
