Duffy, Royals have 5-game winning streak end, fall to Bosox

Now winners of three in a row, and with no hopes of making the playoffs, Boston’s players are using the rest of the schedule to make a lasting impression on their new boss, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. Bogaerts’ productive out proved rather unproductive in a way, as he essentially took the bat out of David Ortiz’ hands thanks to a walk. The Red Sox made it 4-0 in the third when Hanigan singled with runners on second and third, then scored on Bradley’s triple. 241 on August 6 before going 21 for 42 with five home runs and 15 RBIs over his last 11 games.

Duffy again encountered armed resistance in the third inning. There was no home run derby as there was against Kluber. Shaw is now batting.

In his only meeting since joining Boston, Miley (9-9, 4.58) yielded five hits over six scoreless innings in a 13-2 win at Kauffman Stadium on June 21. Miley sliced and diced the Royals lineup, striking out six whilst walking none in his 7.1 innings pitched. The Louisiana native has had his own problems with consistency and allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last seven starts while surrendering at least five in each of the other three. Aside from the homer, the Royals managed only singles and the lone walk against Miley. He looked comfortable with a big lead Saturday, giving up two runs and four hits while striking out eight in a 22-10 win. In 39 games in right, he’s committed three errors.

“It just worked”, manager Torey Lovullo said of the decision to hit Sandoval second. With Brock Holt on the shelf, Lovullo needed to mix up the order a bit.

Following last night’s mental lapse, Rusney Castillo did not start in right field tonight. I’m not exactly buying in to this explanation, as it’s a rather convenient excuse.

Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia could return from a nagging hamstring injury in early September.

Boston Red Sox’s Mookie Betts dives back safely under the tag of Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer on a pick-off attempt during the seventh inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Thursday, August 20, 2015. As is often the case in these types of games, the Red Sox starter was a lefty lacking extreme velocity, Wade Miley. Not too shabby considering his up-and-down season pitching in the AL East.

“He kept the line moving all night long”, manager Ned Yost said.

With the Red Sox out of contention, there’s little incentive from the club’s standpoint to rush him back.
