Huawei to start smartphone production in India from next month
Announcing the manufacturing facility from Delhi, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister for Information & Technology, Law and Justice said the government is working towards making India an electronic manufacturing hub.

Meanwhile, Jay Chen, CEO, Huawei revealed that the company is celebrating its 16 years in India and hence we have been consistently expanding our footprint in the market.
According to its press release, Huawei is opening the manufacturing plant in Chennai alongside Flex India, a branch of the global electronics manufacturer Flextronics International.
Huawei will start making its Honor series phones at Flextronics manufacturing plant in Chennai from the first week of October and the plant will have the capacity to make three million units by the end of 2017.
Flex now makes Lenovo and Motorola-brand smartphones at its Chennai production facility, which has an overall manufacturing capacity of 10 million units. Huawei will also open over 200 service centers, including more than 30 exclusive Huawei service centres in India. Huawei will launche these “Made In India” devices in the Indian market by early as October, says the company.
But Huawei isn’t the only smartphone vendor angling for a piece of the Indian pie.
Jeff Reece, head of the telecommunications business segment at Flex, said at the same ceremony that the alliance with Huawei “demonstrates our commitment to bring innovative supply chain solutions, high-quality advanced manufacturing and after-market services” to its partner’s operations in India. Sanjeev said that Huawei has tied up with 350 distributorsto sell smartphones from over 50,000 retail counters in the country covering all the districts. The company has over the years started selling consumer devices such as smartphones and television set top boxes, as well as networking products to businesses. We believe India will overtake USA as the second largest smartphone market in 2017.
We have seen significant acceptance of our smartphones in India over the last few years and have big plans for India, added Peter Zhai, President, Huawei India.
Huawei’s latest overseas manufacturing initiative comes a month after the company launched its largest global service centre in Bangalore, the capital of the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. “We are convinced about the growth potential and future of India and we’ll keep looking for opportunities to increase our presence here”.

He said that hiring of 3,000 people will be completed by the end of this year, taking Huawei’s direct workforce toaround 12,000 in India. Huawei joins a growing list of foreign names, from Xiaomi to Lenovo, now getting their phones put together in the country.
