US, Russia Fail To Reach Syria Agreement Amid Fresh Aleppo Offensive

NEW YORK (AP) – The United States and Russian Federation ended any pretenses Thursday of their cease-fire for Syria remaining in force after days of increased violence and the Syrian military’s announcement of a new offensive in Aleppo.

The announcement came just minutes after the United States and Russian Federation convened a last-ditch meeting in NY to save their Syria ceasefire plan and followed several hours of intensive bombardment that left Aleppo in flames.

General Igor Konashenkov said: We are not jumping to unfounded conclusions. “Time is short and eastern Aleppo is under attack”.

“The next few hours – days at maximum – are crucial for making it or breaking it”.

The United Nations is ready to restart vital aid convoys to Syria days after airstrikes targeted a humanitarian convoy near the northern city of Aleppo, killing 20 people, according to a U.N. envoy.

“We are sending today an inter-agency convoy that will cross conflict lines into a besieged area of rural Damascus”, Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told Reuters.

Responding to Russian allegations, the Pentagon said Wednesday it had no aircraft flying anywhere near where a humanitarian aid convoy that was struck Monday in Aleppo, Syria.

The spokesman hoped the United Nations could reach Aleppo “in the near future”.
