These pledges will bring hope to some of the millions of forcibly displaced people around the world who have been asking for help from the global community.
UNHCR also welcomed the announcement of the World Bank’s Global Concessional Financing Facility (GCFF) and of the generous US$50 million contribution of the United States to make it operational. He said she was the face of so many young girls and boys who have had to flee their homes.
United States President Barack Obama has called for a second summit on the subject on Tuesday.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, whose report on refugees and migrants laid the basis for the summit document, said he was aware of the criticism from non-governmental groups. “Failing millions of migrants who deserve far more than lives marked by cradle-to-grave indignity and desperation”, Zeid told world leaders gathered for the high-level General Assembly meeting in NY.
Ban and United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein urged states to implement commitments in the declaration, which Ban said could allow more children to go to school and more workers to seek jobs overseas.
“The scale of the global refugee problem demands an appropriate scale of response”, Miliband told CNN.
Secretary of State John Kerry and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will work together to support hopes of a Mideast peace agreement. His speech comes as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump renewed his call for a ban on Muslim immigrants after terror attacks over the weekend in New York, New Jersey and Minnesota caused mostly minor injuries.
Obama met Monday with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi (HY’-dahr ahl ah-BAH’-dee) while in NY to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Our partners are providing legal protection services to unaccompanied children, and families, on the Greek mainland, and housing support to some of the most vulnerable refugees awaiting relocation to other countries in Europe.
National Security Advisor Susan Rice in June announced that the gathering – co-hosted along with the U.S. by Canada, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, Mexico, Sweden and the UN Secretary General – would seek an increase in funding of at least 30%, a doubling of permanent resettlement, and expanded access to education and work rights for refugees.

A summit hosted by US President Barack Obama garnered pledges from dozens of countries to resettle or allow the lawful admission of some 360,000 refugees, doubling the number of slots that were available past year, the US envoy to the United Nations said. He said that “today’s commitment means that we’re going to be creating employment opportunities for more than 220,000 refugees”.
