Trooper Ali Hammoud, 29, of Dearborn Heights, a four-year veteran with the state police, suffered broken ribs and a broken clavicle in the accident, Shaw said. Officers left the funeral to respond to his crash. Shaw says they are looking for the driver of the pickup.
Michael Shaw says a road rage incident on Interstate 94 is to blame for the accident, and that they’re now seeking a driver who did not stop at the scene.
– A church full of people erupted in applause Friday afternoon when Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced he was promoting fallen Sergeant Kenneth Steil to captain. The other vehicle swerved to avoid the braking truck and hit the motorcycle officer.
Eastbound I-94 was closed at Vernier Road. Stay with FOX 2 for updates on the trooper’s condition.
On its Twitter feed, State Police thanked everyone for their thoughts and prayers and said the trooper is being evaluated.

“Arrangements were made to escort his kids to school”, said Monsignor G. Michael Bugarin of St. Joan of Arc during Steil’s funeral Mass Friday. He was shot while chasing a suspect.
