Troubled suburban Chicago community college starts up process of firing president

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees could vote to fire President Robert Breuder at its Thursday meeting.

Breuder has been at the center of some of the school’s biggest controversies, including his $763,000 buyout, the impression that politically connected individuals received lucrative contracts and lavish college spending – eventually becoming one of the centerpieces of a federal investigation.

Breuder took another hit in March when the Chicago Tribune published details of expensive tabs he and other administrators racked up at the school’s on-campus fine-dining restaurant. He’s been on administrative leave since April when a new majority took over the board.

COD, which is based in Glen Ellyn, is the largest community college in the state. The college is under investigation by law enforcement and education officials.

Five members of the seven-member board, which was elected in the spring, would need to vote in favor of ousting Breuder, though the Daily Herald reports that it remains unclear which members would vote which way.

Board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said the vote was not a conclusion or finding, but the beginning of a process.

Breuder and his attorney haven’t returned calls. “The investigations have resulted in this proposed action for board consideration”.
