Of the 150 people detained in jail, more than 65 were arrested outside the federal courthouse for crossing the barricades and another 85 were arrested while trying to disperse after a freeway blockade in west St. Louis County. The demonstrations that followed Brown’s killing in August 2014 threw the St. Louis suburb into the national spotlight and sparked calls for better treatment of minorities by police.
Police said that while there were some protests on Tuesday night, they were mostly peaceful and that there were no arrests.
The street has been the focus of demonstrations marking the anniversary of the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
Mr Brown, 18, was fatally shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.
Police on Tuesday released a video of that shooting that they said showed the teen, Tyrone Harris, drawing a pistol from his trousers.
Prosecutors charged the man, Tyrone Harris, who was in critical condition in a hospital, with four counts of assault on law enforcement, five counts of armed criminal action, and one count of shooting a firearm at a vehicle.
St. Louis County police say surveillance video shows an 18-year-old suspect critically wounded Sunday night by officers was armed with a handgun.
John Karriman, a representative of the group who has taught at the Missouri Southern State University police academy and ran unsuccessfully as a Libertarian Party candidate for county sheriff in southwest Missouri, did not immediately respond to a cellphone message seeking comment. The officers returned fire and shot Harris.
Stenger continued his praise of Belmar on Tuesday, who he said helped cool tensions Monday night. Officers lined several blocks of West Florissant. On Sunday night, several businesses had been damaged.
More than 20 people were arrested. Nor was any smoke or tear gas used, police said.
It was a far cry from the violence and tension that marred the previous two nights.
The organization says its members are all former military, police or first responders who pledge to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic”, according to the group’s website. They set up barricades then stood in the middle of the highway bringing traffic to a complete stop during Monday evening’s rush hour. He said members plan to remain in Ferguson “at least through the end of the week”.
“If the goal is to achieve any kind of working relationship with the protesters, the St. Louis County Police Department needs to rethink its strategy”, Clark said.
