Yanks Fall to Indians, 3-2

The game got off to a slow start as both pitchers were flawless through the opening inning.

The Yankees weren’t happy. He’s also facing a strong Yankees’ lineup that is hitting at most spots.

“It’s just, you’re in the heat of the battle”, McCann said. “I like Dan, I’ve caught in front of him for a long time”. It’s one call. We just had a disagreement. “Tonight I did”.

In Tomlin’s second start since having right shoulder surgery in March, his lone mistake was a 0-1 breaking ball that led to a home run by designated hitter Alex Rodriguez in the fourth inning. They went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Cleveland Indians have spent portions of this season discussing how Josh Tomlin is progressing from shoulder surgery.

“I ejected Joe for leaving his position to argue balls and strikes”, Iassogna said to a pool reporter. “Pitched inside pretty effectively”.

They’ll try to keep it going for Ivan Nova, who insists he’s fine after taking a comebacker off his right ring finger in his last start. Ultimately, though, the Yankees’ biggest problem didn’t seem to be the man behind the plate.

Girardi said he had no history with Iassogna. I struck out because I didn’t swing the bat well. “I thought the pitch to [McCann] was up”. I mean even the 3-0 to Greg Bird’s not a strike. That’s a big situation, too.

“I just want the strike zone to be right”, Girardi said. “You know what you’re going to get”. That left the game up to Didi Gregorius. McCann said he saw Nova’s struggles more in his breaking ball. “So what if I was going to go out and say, ‘What was the conversation?’ I don’t think that’s right either”. “He left it a little bit more middle and up than he has been, and they did a good job hitting tonight”.

“This place can get rockin’, we’ve seen it”, Allen said. He threw 116 pitches, three short of his career high. He allowed two runs and five hits over 6 1-3 innings in Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Minnesota. “It wasn’t his best, but he battled out there and kept us in it”. Some guys had given him a lot of trouble.

The Yankees have reverted to being a team hitting home runs in droves this season, a notion Joe Girardi pointed out as an “important” distinction on Thursday afternoon. He’d finally gotten back-to-back days off, and he looked sharp. Warren threw two solid innings. It was his first appearance in any game – majors or minors – since August 7 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Once again, Nova was able to get out of the inning with only one run but again gave up a run the next inning.

And it didn’t help the Yankees that Teixeira, the only Yankee to have ever hit a homer off Tomlin entering Thursday (Teixeira has two homers in 13 at-bats against him) was sidelined.

Girardi was chucked in between those two hits, swiping his foot across the dirt outside the third-base batter’s box to indicate that he believed the 0-2 strikeout pitch to McCann was outside. That was after the McCann pitch. Just not much to get worked up about. “Now, if I said something first, that’s it”.
