Citing his ‘conscience’, Ted Cruz declares support for Trump
“Even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable – that’s why I have always been * a class=”_58cn” data-ft=”{“tn”:”*N”,”type”:104}” href=”https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/neverhillary?source=feed_text&story_id=10154476728267464″ *#NeverHillary”, Cruz said.

“Vote your conscience. Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust”, Cruz said during his convention speech.
Cruz showed the hard feelings hadn’t subsided two months later at the Republican National Convention, when he blatantly undercut Trump with a lack of endorsement during his turn at the lectern. This was “a time for choosing”, to borrow a phrase from Cruz’s idol Ronald Reagan. “I think it’s the worst political miscalculation of my lifetime”, Deace wrote in one of a series of tweets. As Dara Lind wrote at the time, Cruz’s move seemed to be a bet that Trump would lose disastrously, and that Cruz himself would be positioned to pick up the pieces from that failure in 2020.
March 25: Cruz calls Trump a “sniveling coward”.
“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz said.
“The day that was abrogated was the day this became personal”, he said, adding he would never vote for Clinton. Trump, for his part, said this summer that he would not accept Cruz’s endorsement anyway.
In July, Trump said, “I don’t want his endorsement”. He was a tough and brilliant opponent.
May 3: Trump claims Cruz’s dad was involved in JFK’s assassination.
The day after the Republican National Convention ended, Trump brought it up again.
Trump’s Texas drum major – Lt. Gov. And if that still looked to be the case, Cruz’s rejection of Trump would have looked prescient when he lost big. Trump this week also said he would consider naming Sen.
Friday, Trump released a new list of potential Supreme Court appointments that included Utah Sen.
Trump now employs some members of the Cruz orbit: Jason Miller, who was a top adviser to the senator’s campaign, and Kellyanne Conway, who ran a pro-Cruz super PAC before becoming Trump’s campaign manager.
But he’s now praising Cruz’s timing ahead of Monday night’s first presidential debate when, “America focuses on this election”.
The two men spent months lobbing pointed insults at one another.
“Like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes in prevail in November”, Cruz pivoted, as Team Trump delegates grew restless.
During the campaign, Trump habitually referred to his rival as “Lyin’ Ted”.
An announcement would be the latest twist in a contentious relationship between Trump and Cruz, his closest competitor in the Republican nomination race.
But in the end, he decided, Trump “is the only thing standing in the way” of a Clinton presidency that he said would be devastating to the United States.

Cruz said that for some time he had been seeking greater specificity on Trump’s views toward filling the opening on the court, which is now deadlocked between four right-leaning and four left-leaning jurists. During the presidential campaign, Cruz had promised to endorse the party’s nominee, no matter who that turned out to be.
