“Vote your conscience. Vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust”, Cruz said during his convention speech.

Cruz showed the hard feelings hadn’t subsided two months later at the Republican National Convention, when he blatantly undercut Trump with a lack of endorsement during his turn at the lectern. This was “a time for choosing”, to borrow a phrase from Cruz’s idol Ronald Reagan. “I think it’s the worst political miscalculation of my lifetime”, Deace wrote in one of a series of tweets. “I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz said.

“The day that was abrogated was the day this became personal”, he said, adding he would never vote for Clinton. Trump, for his part, said this summer that he would not accept Cruz’s endorsement anyway.

The two men spent months lobbing pointed insults at one another.

“Like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes in prevail in November”, Cruz pivoted, as Team Trump delegates grew restless.

During the campaign, Trump habitually referred to his rival as “Lyin’ Ted”.

An announcement would be the latest twist in a contentious relationship between Trump and Cruz, his closest competitor in the Republican nomination race.

Cruz said that for some time he had been seeking greater specificity on Trump’s views toward filling the opening on the court, which is now deadlocked between four right-leaning and four left-leaning jurists. During the presidential campaign, Cruz had promised to endorse the party’s nominee, no matter who that turned out to be.
