Hindu Munnani functionary hacked to death, bandh turns violent

Mettupalayam: A Hindu Munnani activist was hacked to death in Coimbatore in the wee hours of Friday. The assailants escaped after attacking Sasikumar.
A Hindu Munnani functionary was hacked to death by a four-member gang in Coimbatore, leading to tension in the district and neighbouring Tirupur even as a state-wide bandh called by the outfit turned violent here with a police jeep set on fire and three personnel sustaining burn injuries.
Tension prevailed in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts as the news about the murder spread.
The Times of India has reported that the 36-year-old C Sasikumar, hailing from Subramaniyampalayam in Coimbatore district, was on his way to home on a two-wheeler when the men chased him on bikes and attacked him with sickles. Though he was immediately taken to a private hospital by people who rushed in to save him from the attackers, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Chennai: A driver from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) suffered minor injuries and two buses were damaged in sporadic violence in North Chennai on Friday, a day after the murder of a Hindu Munnani functionary in Coimbatore. Some schools have also made a decision to declare holiday for safety concerns. The city witnessed tense moment as police lathi charged crowds at various places.
The trouble started when a section of mourners asked shopkeepers to down their shutters which led to an argument and the two groups started stone pelting, police said. They were demanding their release and accused police of failing to nab the accused.

As the rally was in progress, the situation went out of control as the mob pelted stones targeting glass panes of commercial establishments on Cross Cut Road, Power House, Sivananda Colony and Mettupalayam Road.
