Bandh called by Hindu Munnani turns violent

Krishnagiri district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vishwa Hindu Parishad Suri (45) hacked to death by four masked men while on his way to Nehru Nagar in his auto in Hosur.

Shops remained shut and public transport was hit in Coimbatore on Friday after religious group Hindu Munnani called for a statewide bandh to mark the murder of its spokesperson Sasikumar, The Hindu reported.

Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara C Subramanium issued a statement blaming the police for being unable to prevent a series of brutal attacks on his cadre members.

“He was returning home, when four persons in two wheelers chased and attacked him with sickles at Subramaniyampalayam”.

On Friday evening around 5pm, when Sasikumar’s body was taken out in a procession, before his cremation, vehicles and shops on the Mettupalayam Road (NH 67) were vandalized by the Hindu Munnani group.

Coimbatore on Friday literally became a battlefield with mobs going around the city destroying property after the murder of a Hindu Munnani leader.

In nearby Tirupur, a strong hold of the organisation, shops, hotels and other commercial establishments remained closed, as well as in other major towns, including Udhagamandalam in Nilgiris district.

Tamil Nadu director general of police T.K. Rajendran has said, “The situation in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts are under control and we will ensure that the miscreants are immediately arrested”. A driver of a private bus sustained injuries on his hand in the stone pelting, police said.

A group of men pelted stones at buses parked on the roadside and broke window screens.

A large number of police were deployed on the premises of the Government Hospital here, where the postmortem is being carried out.

Special police teams are on a lookout to nab the culprits. The city witnessed tense moment as police lathi charged crowds at various places.

Police are maintaining tight vigil.
