Noah Syndergaard has strep throat, will miss Saturday start

The New York Mets just can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to their starting rotation.

Noah Syndergaard #34 of the New York Mets pitches in the first inning against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field on September 2, 2016 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

Manager Terry Collins made the announcement before playing the Phillies on Friday night.

The Mets are hoping that Syndergaard will be ready to pitch again early next week, which puts him in line for two more starts before the end of the season.

Syndergaard had been lined up to start a potential Wild Card game for the Mets on October 5, but his illness will now disrupt those plans.

With the Mets, San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals all bunched within a game in the standings, Collins noted the Mets may no longer have the luxury of lining up a pitcher for the wild-card game.

“Right now, in our situation, we can’t worry about October 5 We’ve got to worry about being there October 1”, Collins said.

Another day, another health issue for a Mets starter. Rookie Gabriel Ynoa is filling in for Matz instead. On Thursday, the Mets announced Steven Matz was scratched due to discomfort in his shoulder while Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey are out for the season.

The Mets already are relying on rookies Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman in the rotation. Gilmartin has been working out of the bullpen since joining the Mets, making it unlikely that he’ll be able to pitch deep into a game.
