Craven had earlier passed the Paralympic flag between the mayor of Rio and governor of Tokyo, the Japanese capital city where the next Games will be held in 2020. At the begining, many people feared that the Rio Paralympics would be a fiasco but some scintillating performances and stunning feats turned it into an unforgettable triumph of determination over disability.
ParalympicsGB – fielding 264 athletes in 19 of the 22 sports – finished second on the medal table to China, winning 64 gold medals and 147 in all over 11 days of competition.
But nobody could have imagined the success the 308-strong Chinese delegation would achieve in Rio as they became only the third country to win 100 gold medals in a single edition of the Paralympic Games. Rio 2016 President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman exclaimed during the ceremony.
Egypt’s medal-winning champions from the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics have chose to boycott the country’s satellite TV channels due to their failure to broadcast their competitions and a general lack of interest in their achievements. “And we are going to present this gold medal to the soul of Bahman Golbarnezhad”.
Prosecutors said Olympic Broadcasting Services broke labor laws by making employees work irregular hours and for more than 10 hours a day during the August 5-21 Olympic Games and Paralympics on September 7-18. The broadcaster made a ground-breaking commitment to on and off-screen diversity, assembling the largest ever team of disabled presenters on United Kingdom television and training 20 disabled production staff who worked on coverage of the Games.
The Russian Paralympic team has been illegally banned from participating in the 2016 Summer Games, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
The two-sport athlete won the paratriathlon in Rio, as part of the US women’s team that swept the medal stand. Irada Aliyeva in the javelin with a score of 42.58 meters, updated Paralympic record and Elena Ciobanu in the women’s 100 meters (11.71) repeated the European record. Czechowski also won silver in Sydney in the discus.
The silver medals were also taken by swimmer Raman Salei, athlete Elena Chebanu (two silver), and athlete Kamil Aliyev.
A joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding Golbarnezhad’s crash is now being carried out by the IPC, Rio 2016 organisers, local police, medical authorities and the UCI, cycling’s governing body.
