Feyenoord stuns Man United 1-0 in Europa

The Manchester Evening News claim that the Ivory Coast worldwide is expected to be assessed by United’s medical team at Carrington this afternoon before a decision is made about his availability for the trip to Vicarage Road on Sunday.

A 79th-minute strike from midfielder Tonny Vilhena punished a lacklustre display from a United side that was much-changed but still contained nearly £300m worth of signings.

After a solid start to the Mourinho era, United is now under pressure for the first time and will seek a swift return to winning ways against Watford in the Premier League on Monday (AEST).

“So I looked to this game with proper eyes, you can say: ‘Ah, you changed eight players.’ Ok, I changed eight players but I played with a good team, enough good players to win the match”.

“The second half was different, it was exactly when we were trying to win and Feyenoord was trying not to lose that they scored the goal, which I think we didn’t deserve”.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team had swept to the top of the Dutch league with five successive victories and they started brightly as Steven Berghuis and Vilhena brought de Gea into action with long-range efforts.

This is Manchester United’s first full campaign in the Europa League, or its UEFA Cup precursor, since the 1995-96 season.

“I will be ready when the manager wants me to play”.

“We wanted to give ourselves a good start to the group but unfortunately we didn’t play up to our usual standards”.

Anthony Martial’s fizzing strike wide in the opening 30 minutes was the best United could muster from both halves.

“I know they want to win, they want to work and that is what we have to do”.

“I am here not to let them be in a negative mood or in a negative because we lost two matches in four days. Double unlucky because he [Jorgensen] was offside”.

“The players are professional, they have to be fit and they have to be mentally strong to play again”.

“The second half was better than the first”.

Of Paul Pogba, who was disappointing, the manager said: “He was like the team”.

Mourinho also felt hard done by Feyenoord’s victor, with suspicions of offside against Nicolai Jorgensen, who provided the assist for Vilhena.
