Manchester Derby in Football League Cup fourth round

It was a less straightforward evening for City’s rivals Manchester United, who were given a testing workout by third tier Northampton Town before goals from Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford wrapped up a 3-1 win.

Manchester United’s EFL Cup date with Manchester City on October 26 has caused a brutal fixture headache for Jose Mourinho.

Ties will be played on the week beginning 24 October.

The Old Trafford boss will certainly be on the lookout for revenge after his old adversary Pep Guardiola got the better of him in the Premier League earlier this month.

City looked in control of their tie against Swansea from the start and took the lead when Clichy ended a flowing move with a right-footed effort four minutes after halftime.

The two Manchester rivals were then paired against each other in the fourth round draw that also pitched Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United against Chelsea.

It looked like being a long night for Northampton when Michael Carrick capped his first appearance since the Community Shield with a sumptuous strike, only for Alex Revell to convert a penalty just before halftime.

The Belgium defender played for the first time since May but left the field and went straight down the tunnel shortly after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stoppage-time consolation goal for Swansea. Bristol City beat Fulham 2-1.

Markus Henriksen saw Hull past Stoke 2-1, having also set up Ryan Mason’s equaliser after Marko Arnautovic’s thumping opener.

Meanwhile, there will be a London derby between West Ham United and Chelsea, who won a dramatic third-round tie 4-2 against Leicester in extra time on Tuesday.

Norwich City will travel to Elland Road to face Leeds while Preston, who eliminated Bournemouth, will travel to Rafael Benitez’ Newcastle.

Southampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, Jake Hesketh adding to Charlie Austin’s penalty, while Paddy McNair’s brace earned Sunderland a 2-1 win after QPR had led through Sandro.
