Bullpen comes through for Mets after Phillies knock out Gabriel Ynoa early
RAYS 2, YANKEES 0: Blake Snell and Tampa Bay’s bullpen combined to strand 11 runners in a win that prevented a much-needed three-game sweep by NY.

New York Mets fans felt just about every emotion imaginable Thursday night.
Franco led off the third by homering off Verrett – the Mets’ second pitcher.
A day after Yoenis Cespedes just missed a walkoff home run, his Mets teammate Asdrubal Cabrera hit a no-doubter in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday to give his team a 9-8 win over the Phillies to move a half-game in front of the idle Cardinals in the NL wild-card race.
Gilmartin is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 10 career appearances against the Phillies, who were the opponent for his lone previous career start last October 1. Philadelphia produced ten hits and five walks with Maikel Franco and going solo while Darin Ruf clubbed a two run bomb. Josh Smoker followed by allowing a pair of runs, but Erik Goeddel tossed 1 1⁄3 scoreless innings.
“I saw he had five or six baserunners in the first couple of innings”, Collins said about Ynoa, “and I said, ‘I don’t like the way this is looking.’ So I thought we’d try to score early”. He went 1-for-3 Friday night and is batting.364 with 20 extra-base hits, 22 RBI and 21 runs scored in 33 games since coming off the disabled list August 19.
“We’ve got to get some innings out of Ynoa tonight”, Collins said of his starter before the game. “We had to win this game to set the tone after the series we had against the Atlanta Braves”, Reyes said.
Robles was summoned to mop up a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and managed to induce an inning-ending double play before recording the final six outs to earn his first career save.
Flores said the wrist/hand felt “OK”, Friday, but not good enough to swing a bat yet. “If you do, you’re going to be successful and if you don’t, you’re going to get hurt”. The RBI singles came off the bats of second baseman Cesar Hernandez and right fielder Roman Quinn, their 25th and fourth RBIs of the season respectively. NY came within inches of winning in the 10th, but a potential home run down the right field line by pinch-hitter Lucas Duda drifted just foul. D’Arnaud’s double in the bottom of the inning cut the Mets’ deficit in half.
Cabrera fouled a ball off his leg in the fifth inning, but he didn’t actually leave the game until two innings later, presumably as a result of the errant foul ball.
The Philadelphia Phillies are going nowhere in 2016 but I know beating the Mets would be a great feeling.
The injury to Cabrera’s left knee forced him out of the lineup for much of August.
“Let’s put it this way: That’s the thing about September”, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard has been scratched from his start Saturday night because of strep throat.
“There are days he doesn’t take batting practice because he knows he has to take a break from moving around”, said Collins, referring to the strained left patellar tendon that landed Cabrera on the disabled list last month. The Padres tried to mount a comeback after Alex Dickerson hit his tenth home run of the year, but relief pitcher Sergio Romo was able to get the save and give the Giants the win.
RHP Jeremy Hellickson (12-9) starts against the Mets for the fifth time this year on Friday.

MILWAUKEE – Chris Carter homered, Ryan Braun delivered a late clutch hit and the Milwaukee Brewers turned their second triple play of the season in a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
