A multi-vehicle crash on the San Mateo Bridge late Thursday night that blocked all westbound lanes started as a police pursuit of a patrol auto stolen from the scene of an earlier crash, according to the Hayward Police Department.

Hayward police first responded to an initial vehicle crash at 9:23 p.m.in the Hayward Hills at Oaks and Roxbury.

The Hayward Police Department notified the California Highway Patrol around 9:45 p.m. that it was pursuing a vehicle, which ABC7 News identified as a stolen police cruiser.

The Hayward Police Department has a rule against leaving vehicles running and unattended, Cantrell said, and it appears the officer was abiding by that directive in this case.

Chambers then allegedly raced through the city at high speeds before being spotted by officers at the intersection of Jackson Street and Santa Clara Avenue. “In this instance, the officer was using his vehicle and the emergency lights to divert traffic around the collision”.

KTVU reports that Chambers had no outstanding warrants and was not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Chambers then reportedly drove the vehicle eastbound on Highway 92 before getting into another collision – this time with multiple cars – near the Clawiter Road exit.
