Andy Murray is desperate for rest after Davis Cup exit

It was thus left to Leonardo Mayer to complete the job for the South Americans after replacing Juan Martin Del Potro.

Croatia, the 2005 champions, sealed their ticket to the November 25-27 final on home ground after Marin Cilic romped to a 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 win over Richard Gasquet and an unassailable lead over nine-time champions France in Zadar.

On the verge of tears, Jamie continued: “You know we played a great match, it was exciting for me because Juan Martin [Del Potro] played the match, and for me, it’s exciting to play against the best players in the world”.

Del Potro, still feeling his way back after a series of wrist injuries pushed him to the brink of retirement, had hinted yesterday night that he may not play Sunday after featuring in the doubles due to concerns for his health following a punishing summer schedule.

Murray played his part, winning in straight sets despite needing treatment on a quad problem.

“I am very proud of all the players”.

Pella’s level had dropped significantly enough to make the last few games as comfortable for a man playing with one good leg as it could be and the victory was clinched on the first match point.

Evans just stayed that nudge ahead, to take the first set and hope was high but as soon as Mayer’s serve started to fire, it swiftly became a different story.

Murray said: “It’s obviously great”.

Murray picked up a thigh strain during his Davis Cup singles victory over Guido Pella on Sunday but Press Association Sport understands he will not pull out of the charity event at Glasgow’s Hydro Arena.

“Obviously I wasn’t so emotionally exhausted after that match but I had just become a father for the first time so that was a challenging period for me. It is a very special moment for the whole team”, Orsanic said.

Party time: Leonardo Mayer is mobbed by his Argentina teammates as they secured a spot in the Davis Cup final.

The visitors’ best player, who was exhausted after beating Andy Murray in five hours and seven minutes on day one and losing against him and his brother Jamie in almost three hours in the doubles on day two, surprised everyone by declining to play the match that broke the 2-2 deadlock on Sunday afternoon. “He nearly beat (Stanislas) Wawrinka and if he plays at that level he has got a chance”, Murray said. Then the great Boris Becker played a super match to defeat the equally great Edberg in a one-sided match 6-3, 6-1 and 6-4.

Murray won his match in a dominating fashion, thoroughly outclassing his opponent in the first reverse singles.

The Scot said: “I’ve never really had any muscle injuries before”.
