Free public Wi-Fi could come to the European Union by 2020

Jean-Michel Jarre, CISAC president, said: ‘The European Commission has made an effort to respond to the chorus of voices calling on government support to address the unfair situation in today’s digital market, where major players are using the works of creators to generate colossal revenues without fairly remunerating them. “More competition and further integration of the European market will allow us to reach these goals, helped by the right environment created by the new Communications Code”.

The news comes as the European Union prepares to abolish roaming costs across the continent from June next year.

As Engadget report, you wouldn’t just receive unlimited coverage, but rural areas that typically get crappy Wi-Fi speeds and local companies that can’t always afford to offer their connection for free would benefit hugely from the boost.

Twenty-two of the EU’s 28-member states are also members of the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance, headquartered in Brussels, but Juncker insisted the bloc’s military ambitions would not undercut this key relationship. But NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg cautioned earlier this month that “the thing we have to avoid is duplication”.

If Juncker’s proposals are enacted, “it truly will be a quantum leap in European Union defense cooperation”, Terlikowski said. The problem, he told an audience in Cyprus gathered for his annual State of the Union speech Wednesday, is the rise of “galloping populism… we need … to protect ourselves against it”. “The Americans want us to take more responsibility for our neighborhood”.

British Conservative lawmaker Syed Kamall in contrast accused Juncker of indulging in the kind of “supranationalism” that turned so many Britons against the bloc.
