“Both the trials were successful as the missiles hit the target directly”, said a scientist associated with the project.
The missile was designed and jointly developed with Israel.
According to reports, the missile was launched from launch pad-3 of the ITR.
President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said the nation is proud of the successful test-firing of the Surface to Air Missile – Barak-8, adding that it would further boost India’s defence capabilities in technologically challenging areas.
India successfully test-fired Barak-8 missile on Tuesday.
A DRDO official was quoted by media sources as saying: “Apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi-Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile”. The test was undertaken on the Western Seaboard by INS Kolkata on December 30, 2015.
After all trials are conducted successfully, these missiles will be inducted in all three services- the army, navy and air force.
Many industries viz. BDL, MIDHANI, TATA, GODREJ, SEC, PEL, ADITYA and others have contributed towards the development of Missile systems.
As precautionary measures, 3,652 people living within a 2.5 km radius of the test facility were temporarily shifted to nearby shelter camps. Barak-8 had been tested for three times earlier on July 1 and 2.
