Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray will be out for 3-6 weeks after suffering a broken hand during the World Cup. Sullivan said Murray would be given a few days to rest before joining Pittsburgh’s camp.
The 22-year-old Murray, who posted a 15-6-0 record and 2.08 goals-against average while starting 21 games in Pittsburgh’s run to the Stanley Cup, will not be ready for the season opener on October 13.
Murray, 22, technically still qualifies as a rookie after playing in just 13 regular season games a year ago.
Fleury, the Penguins’ franchise goalie for the past decade, will likely begin the season as the starter.
If Murray isn’t ready to start the season, it’s an opportunity for longtime former starter Marc-Andre Fleury to reclaim his top spot.
