Sully lands at the top of the U.S. box office

I’m sure many of you reading this may be already familiar with the story that inspired Sully – on January 15, 2009, three minutes after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, the dual engines of US Airways Flight 1549 were massively damaged when a flock of geese had the misfortune of flying directly into them. In addition to showing Sully’s feat, the film explores the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation of the landing. The film took $35.5m, according to studio estimates on Sunday, surpassing expectations by around $10m.

Still the top grossing film on the global top 10 is The Secret Life of Pets which has now taken $789 million during its box office run. Dergarabedian said that for stars that number is normally in the single digits.

“We’re so proud of Clint Eastwood and the performances in this movie”, said Warners domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. Clint Eastwood’s direction is lean and efficient, and he creates a surprising amount of tension given that he’s telling a recent story with an ending we all know. Goldstein was also struck by how well the film, despite its hyper-local NY story, played in all areas of North America. Eastwood shot it entirely with Imax cameras, a first for a major Hollywood film. The 375 IMAX screens accounted for about $4 million of the total this weekend. The mystery “Bough” is “an example of a guilty pleasure not chasing Oscar”, says Dergarabedian, adding that it’s another successful early fall mashup of romance, horror and suspense with a predominantly African-American cast after “The Perfect Guy”, which topped the box office a year ago. They also discussed the work it took to get Tom’s hair and mustache just right for his role in Sully!

“When the Bough Breaks” generated a B CinemaScore with an audience that was 62 percent female and 61 percent over 25 with Sony distribution president Rory Bruer asserting that those numbers indicate holding power in the coming weeks.

Suicide Squad raked in an estimated $5.7 million, and worldwide is a smash with $699.4 million pulled in. Updated with Friday numbers and revised weekend predictions. The new animated film snagged $3.4 million, despite scathing reviews (15% approval on Rotten Tomatoes). The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, tumbled 62 percent in its second weekend to $1.8 million for a $9.4 million cume. But below it, surprise entry The Wild Life debuted with an estimated $3.4 million. “Pete’s Dragon”, $2.9 million ($2.2 million international). 8.
