He came into the league straight from high school in 1995, the first player to do so in two decades.
Garnett, who played a total of 50,418 minutes (third all-time), scored 26,071 points (17th all-time) and grabbed 14,662 rebounds (ninth all-time) in his career.
After leaving the Celtics in 2013 he spent a couple uneventful seasons with the Brooklyn Nets where he became known more for picking fights than setting pick-and-rolls.
Garnett won the MVP award while playing for Minnesota in 2004 before winning a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

Garnett, who is 40, put the Minnesota Timberwolves on the map when he turned a hapless franchise into an annual playoff contender.
“Kevin Garnett is one of the fiercest competitors our league has ever seen”, commissioner Adam Silver said. On Friday, it was confirmed that “The Big Ticket” will retire after 21 National Basketball Association seasons with three teams.
The T-Wolves reluctantly traded Garnett in 2007 to the Boston Celtics and he was teammates of Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. “He loves the game and played it with a passion you just don’t see very often”.

The 40-year-old ends his 21-year career as one of the most dominant power forwards in National Basketball Association history. “Hands down one of the best to ever play this game”. “Things have changed so much and does he still want to do that?” The year before, Boston had been in the lottery, and it was a tough year to go from a team that had lost I believe it was 18 games in a row to a championship in one season. Rivers said Garnett’s departure from Minnesota was not what he had envisioned, and his ownership opportunity has all but vanished. “Ultimately, with owner Glen Taylor taking the lead, the two sides were able to reach an agreement that ended Garnett”s second tenure with the franchise.
