Officials declare Miami area clear of Zika, credit spraying

Thus, a warning box near the Wynwood area was drawn by the health authorities and the CDC issued a travel advisory for pregnant women and their partners to abstain from entering that box.

First, the good news in Miami: Wynwood, the first USA neighborhood to experience local Zika virus transmission, is no longer considered an active transmission zone because no new cases have been reported since early August.

In its announcement regarding Wynwood, the CDC continued to urge pregnant women and their partners to postpone nonessential travel to all parts of Miami-Dade County if they’re concerned about potential Zika exposure. “It’s good to have Gov. Scott here preaching what we have been saying that [Wynwood] is safe and for people to come back”, Furst said.

In a statement to the press on Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott said it has been 45 days since the last case of local Zika transmission in the Wynwood neighborhood.

The travel advisory to the Wynwood neighborhood was the first time the CDC warned Americans not to visit a USA neighborhood because of an infectious disease outbreak.

The state expanded the Miami Beach Zika zone Friday, declaring that mosquitoes are actively transmitting the virus in a 4.5 square-mile portion of the tourist haven.

“We have purchased additional lab equipment, and we have additional personnel from CDC”.

The Zika virus often has faint symptoms like those of a very mild form of dengue fever, if any.

Last week, state health officials said they had found more Zika-affected mosquitoes in traps set in Miami Beach, and they found more infections, also.

“No new cases of locally transmitted Zika have been reported in the Wynwood-designated area since early August”, the CDC said in a statement.

The new advisory recommends condoms or abstainence for pregnant women and their partners if either of them have lived around Wynwood or traveled there between June 15 and September 18. USA health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. There are 79 non-travel related infections of the virus now in Florida. “We will not hesitate to take action to protect our families and visitors, especially pregnant women and their growing babies”. Participation from Wynwood community members was also important: During today’s news conference, Scott said that local business owners and residents were compliant in keeping their properties clear of standing water.

Scott also lamented the government’s inability to agree on a funding package for Zika.

Levine said the aerial spraying already scheduled for 6 a.m. Sunday will continue to target the area between 8th and 28th streets. Still, the CDC says pregnant women or those seeking to become pregnant need to be cautious.
