IDEQ Issues State Air Advisory

The Clark County Department of Air Quality warned of potentially elevated levels of smoke and ozone in the Las Vegas Valley.

It’s due to the wildfires burning in the southern Sierra Nevada in California. There’s a chance that smoke may angle more toward us as the day continues, so conditions may deteriorate further later today. Friday’s expected cold front*might clear things out a bit, she added in an update.

There are also several large fires burning directly west of Missoula County, including several in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness that are burning largely unchecked. More than 2,500 campers, hikers, employees and residents have been evacuated this week in a recreation area outside Kings Canyon National Park.

Health officials advise people suffering from the smoke to avoid prolonged periods of time outside.

The particulate matter in smoke can increase susceptibility in people with heart or lung diseases – such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or congestive heart disease – and can aggravate existing medical conditions.

In areas where DEQ does not have air monitors or for persons without ready access to the Today’s Air website, visibility can be used to help identify unhealthy smoke levels.
