Native American tribes bring Dakota pipeline fight to US Congress

“The pipeline will generate an estimated $50 million annually in property taxes and almost $74 million in sales taxes to the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and IL – for services to support schools, roads, emergency services and more”.

“I think the really bigger problem is that we are trying to apply global solutions to a state issue”, said Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.

The Republican governor has asked federal officials to reimburse the state for the additional law enforcement costs.

The Departments of Justice, Army and Interior also has said it would “reconsider any of its previous decisions” on land that borders or is under the lake, one of six reservoirs on the Missouri River.

Locally, protests have been peaceful, including a recent gathering at Riley Creek Rest Area near Nauvoo, Ill., where the pipeline will pass across the Mississippi River into IL.

There will another show of support for the Dakota Access Pipeline protesters on Friday, September 23rd, along with the Central Avenue bridge in Great Falls; it is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. In all, the Seneca Nation has sent more than a dozen representatives to the protests, including three first responders to help with medical situations.

The protest was non-confrontational, and there was no overt corporate security presence. “We are standing in solidarity to tell the oil companies and the federal government that you must respect our treaties and you must respect our right to peaceful protest”.

The task force is made up of members from the Morton and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But, the statement also said, “The fact remains there is a critical need for pipelines in Canada”. The investigation will try to determine if they were licensed and take a look at their actions.

Standing Rock has said the Army Corps failed to consider the impact the pipeline could have on sites of religious and cultural importance to the tribe near the Lake Oahe area.

“I am using all tools possible to ensure this investigation is carried out with no bias toward Dakota Access pipeline nor the pipeline protesters”, Kirchmeier said in a statement.

About 20 percent of the more than 1 million barrels of oil produced daily in North Dakota comes from the Fort Berthold Reservation, occupied by the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.

It’s wait and see for opponents and supporters of the Dakota Access Pipeline, a pipeline project created to move hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil each day from North Dakota’s oil fields to refineries in IL.

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe urged Congress and President Obama to halt the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and require federal agencies to conduct meaningful and binding consultation with affected Tribes that will produce an acceptable resolution to the potential hazards posed by the pipeline. Paradigm did not return telephone calls Thursday by The Associated Press.
