Holy Spirit grad Greg Roman fired as Bills offensive coordinator

It just throws off the whole team concept. “I thought I was going to be fishing in my backyard in Florida”, said Marshall, whose left knee twisted awkwardly beneath him when cornerback Stephon Gilmore pulled him down by his facemask.

Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman (pictured with 49ers) was sacked by Bills Friday.

The Buffalo Bills are off to an 0-2 start, and in spite of some decent numbers Thursday evening, Rex Ryan has decided the offense needs to go in a different direction.

There were enormous strides on the offensive side of the ball and similar struggles on defense. With a 12-point lead, an extra point, if made, yields a 13-point lead; while a two-point conversion, if made, yields a 14-point lead.

Bills QB Tyrod Taylor had three TD passes as part of his 297 yards. Speaking of Sammy Watkins, he looked like he was grimacing on the field tonight as he only caught 2 balls for 20 yards. However, Bills guard Richie Incognito has the faith in Lynn and the team to put up a good gameplan and focus on executing on offense.

Otherwise, Buffalo managed 16 first downs, had one drive reach the red zone, and converted 3 of 10 third-down chances. This is what ultimately led to the release of Roman.

The Jets showed resilience, too, in snapping a five-game skid against their AFC East rival and beating Rex Ryan, their former coach, for the first time since he was sacked in NY following the 2014 season.

It’s going to be interesting to see if new offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn can do something more with the offense in Roman’s stead. The 47-year-old served as Ryan’s running backs coach with the New York Jets from 2009 to ’14, before joining Ryan in Buffalo last season.

Prior to hiring Ryan to succeed Doug Marrone as their head coach last season, the Bills interviewed Roman for the vacancy. This could be why he is replacing Roman. “Especially their offense against our defense looked like a mismatch today”. They only ran for 83 and 86 yards against the Baltimore Ravens and Jets respectively. Intended for a streaking Sammy Watkins, the ball hung up in the air a bit underthrown and was grabbed by Jets cornerback Marcus Williams at the NY 13.

On one hand, the Bills deserve criticism for allowing Ryan to consolidate power after doing little to deserve it over his first 18 games as head coach. In Rex Ryan’s mind, it’s not the defense – he’s been betting on himself all offseason that he’ll be able to turn that around. “There’s things we need to learn from it and then move on”. Greg Roman was obviously not getting the job done.
