Snapchat branches out with new ‘Spectacles’
Snapchat also clipped the French word for cat from its name and is now called Snap Inc. That’s right – the company also announced a new product called Spectacles, sunglasses that can record video to upload to Snapchat’s memories section.

After Business Insider obtained and published a video of the glasses in action, Snap officially announced the news in The Wall Street Journal.
Snapchat introduces video-catching sunglasses was posted in Sci-Tech of TheNews International – https://www.thenews.com.pk on September 25, 2016 and was last updated on September 25, 2016.
Spectacles will be available in a limited run this fall, and they cost $129.99.
Spectacles record 10 seconds at a time when the wearer taps a button on the top left-hand corner of the glasses.
“When i got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes”. Spectacles do just one thing. “It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again”.
The product represents the first foray into consumer electronics for the startup behind the popular messaging app.
A video showing the glasses was posted on YouTube. This, coupled with the ease of wearable technology (as opposed to pulling out your phone and waiting for the app to open to take a video) might make Spectacles the next hot item, but would tons of people pay that kind of money when you can have essentially the same thing for free on your smartphone?
Google in January of previous year halted sales of its Internet-linked eyewear Glass, which became available in the United States in early 2014. You can double tap the side of the frames to see a battery life indicator. But the glasses come with a charging case that will juice the Specs automatically when they’re stored. In fact, Snapchat is now a camera company, as per CEO Evan Spiegel.
“We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out”, he told The Journal. That’s around as much as you’ll pay for a pair of Ray Bans, but Ray Bans can’t record your life from a first-person perspective and share it with the world through Snapchat.
These glasses are clearly just the beginning for Snap’s hardware ambitions.
Of course, Spectacles connect to Snap Inc.’s other product: Snapchat. Spiegel wrote on the company blog. “Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand”.
