Mark Hughes gets chairman backing after Stoke’s troubled start

Arnautovic netted Stoke’s third league goal of the season just before the final whistle but Mark Hughes’ side have now lost four straight Premier League games and conceded four goals on three occasions.

Hughes has presided over four losses in a row, with three of those defeats seeing his side concede four goals.

Ryan Shawcross aimed a header on target from Bojan’s corner early in the second half that Steve Mandanda saved easily, as Stoke looked brighter immediately after half-time. “The dressing room is full of good talent, but that talent needs to ally it to sensible play, which we’re not doing”. You’d like to think or hope we’ve earned some credit with them. It’s been like that since the start of the season. Sunderland will need to use their home crowd to get inspiration but it will not be easy as the team is still rebuilding as they have only recently changed manager.

He added: “We’ve been ninth in the last three years, and we spoke about being better than that”. It’s very hard – it affects your life at home. We have got to stick together and, hopefully, come through it. At the moment we’re just chasing games.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has been fined the sum of £8,000 by the Football Association after accepting a misconduct charge following a recent dismissal from the technical area during a Premier League game against Tottenham.

Stoke also suffered a slow start last season but recovered to finish in the top half of the table. The springboard for that revival was a run of five wins from their subsequent seven fixtures.

Next up for Palace is a trip to Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before an away game at struggling Sunderland on Saturday.

Hughes retains the support of the club’s board and will be given time to instigate the recovery.
