Following reports of the phones catching fire, the aviation authority warned airline passengers and crew not to turn on or charge the phones while on board an aircraft nor to place the phones in checked baggage.
Samsung Electronics Co.SSNHZ 0.00 % , reeling from a massive recall of its premium smartphones amid reports of batteries catching fire, said that about 250,000 customers in the USA who had purchased its defective smartphone had exchanged their devices as of Tuesday.
Last week, national carrier Cayman Airways issued a similar warning to its passengers.
Samsung also agreed to do more for consumers who wish to ditch their Note 7s. No, it’s definitely not a big deal that the safe Galaxy Note 7 units now feature a green battery indicator, and we surely don’t recommend turning it back to white since that’s one way to prove that your phone is not a time ticking bomb. According to sources on Thursday, some 20,000 Note 7 owners returned their old phones to get replacements on September 19 when the exchange program kicked off Korea after the devices were recalled for the battery problem. In the United States where the recall program started on September 21, about 500,000 units of the Note 7 smartphones, almost half of the devices that are subject to a voluntary recall issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, have been already exchanged.

The statement continued, “This advisory is the result of Samsung’s recent concerns raised about their Galaxy Note 7 device, as well as the subsequent statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S. strongly advising passengers against using this device inflight, or checking it in with their baggage”. The affected devices were sold in the US before September 15, 2016.
