But Mr Corbyn hit back, insisting there was “absolute unity” in Labour in opposing “any form of anti-Semitism, any form of racism”.

MPs will also be pressing for greater assurances that Corbyn’s supporters will now not try to deselect those of them who have been hostile to his leadership.
The plan to reduce the number of MPs in the House of Commons by implementing a new boundary map means Labour-held constituencies may have to reselect their MPs.
“Our party has a duty of care to our members”, he said.
“Now it is more serious than that. If the Labour Party splits, it could be the end of the Labour Party”.
The bruising leadership contest followed a mass walkout from the shadow cabinet and a 172-40 vote of no confidence in Mr Corbyn’s leadership by MPs.

Pro-Corbyn lawmaker Richard Burgon said he hoped colleagues “who have expended so much energy in the last 12 months trying to remove Jeremy Corbyn will now focus their talents, their energies and their experience on taking the fight to the Conservatives”.

Proposals to restore elections to the shadow cabinet in a bid to smooth the way for the return of moderates who quit in June made no progress at a meeting of the party’s ruling National Executive Committee.

Smith said in a statement that he fully accepts and respects the result. But there might be others that say, “I want to do a particular role”.
