Cutler has thumb sprain; surgery not expected
For the first half of a Week 1 loss to the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler looked very good, going 10-for-13 for 156 yards.

When Bears’ head coach John Fox spoke with reporters on Tuesday, the indication was that Cutler was out indefinitely. He was carted off the field as a precaution Monday night, and the Bears were optimistic after x-rays showed no fracture. Three years ago, Cutler was supposed to miss at least a month because of a groin injury; he returned in three weeks.
Smith is not a Jay Cutler fan. He’s got eight catches for 99 yards in two games after registering just 105 yards in his first five games a year ago. But just a stupid, dumb decision by Cutler in a critical moment of the game. He played through it and then aggravated the injury when he was strip-sacked against the Eagles int he third quarter on Monday night.
Ironically, not before fellow injured Bears teammate Pernell McPhee laced into Cutler following an interception. The Eagles’ corners did their best, but if you tell Nolan Carroll to guard Jeffery on a deep ball, you might as well hand him a snorkel and a fishing net and say, “Hey, go chase down that nuclear submarine and drag it back to shore”.
Cutler said he had surgery on it when he was 11 or 12.
“He’s a passionate guy”. “Everybody’s got a lot vested into this”. No one likes to lose in that type of fashion. He’s upset. I’m upset. Goldman was carted to the locker room after getting hurt. “It’s just kind of one thing after another that kills drives so we got to figure it out obviously”. Injuries are part of the game, unfortunately.
The Eagles really need quick healing from dynamic tight end Zach Ertz, who remains “week-to-week”, Pederson said.
That was the biggest blow for the Bears (0-2), who lost several players and fell again after opening with a loss at Houston.
Yet he’s not the only one dealing with injuries. Cutler has been turnover prone throughout his career and playing with even a minor thumb injury is only going to make it harder for him to take care of the football.
LAKE FOREST – A nightmare of a Monday got an extra dose of bad news on early Tuesday afternoon.

Drops by Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor cost the Eagles two more touchdowns against the Bears, though ultimately it wouldn’t matter as Philly prevailed against Chicago 29-14.
