Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident

Known for his ebullient personality – which could occasionally rankle opponents – and a pitch repertoire that could stagger opponents with both his fastball and a devastating curve, Fernandez was the backbone of the Marlins pitching staff, posting a 2.86 earned-run average.

Fernandez was one of three men killed when the 32-foot boat collided with a rocky jetty off of Miami Beach, the Coast Guard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very hard time”.

Tragic news struck the clubhouse of the Miami Marlins this morning as news surfaced that starting pitcher Jose Fernandez was found dead following a boating accident.

Fernandez was just 24 years old.

It’s not news anyone would want to wake up to on a Sunday morning, let alone any time of day during the week.

The Marlins’ game Sunday at home against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life”. “And you feel sorry for the game of baseball, because it lost one of the better pitchers today”.

The owner of the Miami Marlins says he is feeling the “deepest sorrow” over the death of Jose Fernandez. The native of Santa Clara, Cuba became a USA citizen previous year. The final time I saw Fernandez, it was when he had confirmation that he was back to 2013 level: he was making his second career All-Star appearance, two weeks before his 24th and final birthday.

New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka will miss his scheduled start Monday at Toronto because of what manager Joe Girardi called a slight lower right forearm strain. “It’s very bad news. He was one of the better guys in the entire league, not only as a pitcher”. It was an indifference born from that confidence you could see in the locker room and the swagger that Fernandez had on the mound.

Fernandez posted a photo of his girlfriend sporting a “baby bump” on his Instagram page last week, announcing that the couple were expecting their first child. Perez was the Marlins hitting coach for two seasons while Fernandez was there. “I’m ready for where this journey is going to take us”.

Starting pitcher Jose Fernandez had a career 2.58 ERA
