Jane Pauley replaces Charles Osgood as host of ‘CBS Sunday Morning’

He took over the Sunday morning show in 1994, following in the footsteps of Charles Kuralt. She becomes only the third host in “Sunday Morning” history, also the first woman and the first anchor to have not spent the entirety of her career at CBS News.

It is the top rated Sunday morning news program and consistently trounces rivals “Good Morning America” and “Today”.

Pauley has been cited in CBS News circles as a potential replacement for Osgood, 83, since word surfaced in January that he and CBS had begun discussions about when he might step down.

CBS honoured Osgood with a tribute that delved into his signatures: a fashionable bow tie, his love of telling stories in verse and piano playing.

Osgood announced that his successor on Sunday Morning would be longtime newscaster Jane Pauley. She has been with CBS News since 2014, contributing to “Sunday Morning” and filling in as host.

CBS News President David Rhodes announced today that Pauley will succeed Charles Osgood as anchor. NBC earlier this year launched a retooled Sunday version of “Today”, in which host Willie Geist often gets to offer his viewpoint on some of the news of the day and explore longer-term reportage. A contributor to the show since 2014, Pauley’s first broadcast is set for October 9. “And it’s a great honor to be given the chance to further our show’s legacy of excellence”.

“I can’t think of anything that has given me more pleasure professionally than Sunday Morning”, Osgood said during the show.

“Jane Pauley is the ideal host for the most wide-ranging news program on American culture, our beloved CBS SUNDAY MORNING broadcast”, said Rhodes.

Pauley is joining a franchise that has seen its ratings grow in recent year while the rest of the broadcast TV business has faced audience erosion.

Pauley has been a contributor to the show since 2014. She left “Today” in 1989 and became co-anchor of “Dateline” in 1992.

In Pauley, CBS has found a TV-news veteran who has cut a very noticeable path over the years.
