Police Respond to Gunman at North Carolina Church

A man and officers exchanged fire in a stand-off after the lone gunman opened fired outside a Waynesville church.
The Sheriff’s Office said the suspect is in custody, but Stamey Cove Road remains closed. When deputies arrived, they found only Baker inside.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was handling the investigation Wednesday night and would not say whether the suspect had been killed, or what led to the shooting.
According to the Haywood County Emergency Management office, there was a call about shots fired at the Maple Grove Baptist Church at 3:12 p.m., said Assistant Director Bill Miller.

Four law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting. It reopened at 9:30 p.m.
