Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez Killed in Boating Accident

“Our prayers are with his family and the Miami Marlins”. The Marlins’ game Sunday against the Braves was cancelled and it seemed everyone around baseball, and many in other professional sports, took to Twitter to offer their condolences. The Marlins team was “devastated”.

“Hands down one of my favourite guys to watch pitch!”

Florida Fish and Wildlife Capt. Meagan Dean said the wrecked boat was discovered early morning Sunday on a routine search of the area.

The destroyed boat was eventually towed away. “It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the accident happened”.

None of the victims was wearing a life jacket, Veloz said.

Jose Reyes was in spring training with Fernandez in 2012, his lone season with the Marlins, with the future ace debuting and winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2013.

Fernandez twice attempted to defect from Cuba unsuccessfully and was thrown in jail on a third attempt before finally reaching the United States and attending high school in Tampa, Florida.

The Marlins’ game Sunday against Atlanta was canceled. Moreover, every story you hear about the young man was that he was as nice and upstanding as they come. “I don’t know how you ever get over it”, Girardi said. “I feel as if I had lost a son”.

The already short-handed New York Mets saw their playoff chances dealt another significant blow when left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start Friday because of shoulder soreness.

“A lot of words were said, meaningful words and emotion and prayer”, Marlins president David Samson said. “Somehow we’ve got to overcome that”. His love for the game made other players envious.

On that treacherous boat ride, Fernandez dived into the sea to save someone who had fallen overboard. He was an all-star for the second time. “The emotions range from shock, disbelief to thinking about their families and the adjustments they’re going to have to go through”.

But they also have to go back to work, he said. The Jays added a moment of silence to honour Fernandez before their game against the Yankees.

“I’m here because of his dad”, Fernandez said that March 2015 morning, gesturing around the Marlins’ clubhouse at Roger Dean Stadium. Fernandez has suggested that it was Diaz’ uncle that sparked his interest in baseball. It was an indifference born from that confidence you could see in the locker room and the swagger that Fernandez had on the mound.
