Early voting begins as ballots are issued

Absentee voting begins today, Friday, September 23, 2016.

If a voter chooses to vote a straight party ticket, that voting mark will cast a vote for all candidates in that party, except for the at-large County Council race. “If your name changed or your address has changed since you last voted or your registration status is listed as inactive (from not voting in recent elections), now is the time to update your registration”.

Qualified Virginia voters may vote absentee in-person at their local voter registration office or vote absentee by mail.

In the USA, states have wide discretion when it comes to crafting election laws.

“When you request an absentee ballot you also have to provide a copy of your photo ID card”, said Reid Magney a spokesman for the commission.

For all other registered voters, election day is November 8, 2016.

Minnesota is one of 34 states with some form of early voting and is one of the first to start accepting ballots. In-person early voters can register as they cast their ballots, too. In Maryland and North Carolina, same-day registration is allowed only during the early voting period and not on Election Day.

Laws that either request or require voters to show some form of identification are in effect in 32 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Once you get your ballot in the mail, just follow the instructions and fill it out.

After you send it in, you can track your ballot on the Secretary of State’s website.
