Johnson seizes lead with late surge

US Open champion Dustin Johnson birdied four of the final five holes to open up a three-shot lead over Paul Casey after the third round at the BMW Championship in IN on Saturday.

Englishman Casey also shot 67 for second place at 20 under, his second consecutive runner-up finish, with American Roberto Castro (67) another three shots back in third place.

America’s Dustin Johnson stormed to top of the FedEx Cup standings after cruising to a three-shot victory over England’s Paul Casey at the BMW Championship in Indiana.

Biggest disappointment: World No. 1 Jason Day withdrew after just eight holes of the final round and his status for the Tour Championship is officially in doubt.

Now Johnson will try and replicate something else only Woods has done: Win the Tour Championship as the No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup points race going into the final event.

He was two over for the day and three under for the tournament – well adrift of leader Dustin Johnson – when he brought his participation to a premature close. However, he was still able to record his third straight fourth-place finish.

He had a tap-in birdie at the par-five 15th and then made it a hat-trick at the 16th, before capping off his day with a 15-foot birdie at the last. “I feel like I’ve got a good game plan out here”.

Charl Schwartzel closed with a 64 and got the 30th spot to advance to the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship.

“The trainer is maybe thinking it’s the same type of thing that he dealt with at the Barclays and a year ago where he picked something up in his bus and it kind of got out of line”.

It was the 12th career victory for Johnson on the US PGA Tour and his third of the year, his personal best following his major breakthrough and the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.

“The more I practice, the more I’m in the situation, the more I know what to do and what to expect in the situations and kind of know what shots that I can hit and not to hit and I like it”, he said.

DeChambeau earned $180,000. The 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion got into the field as a non-member with enough PGA Tour money to have placed in the top 200 in the FedEx Cup had he been eligible.

“I think if you look at the tour, it sure helps to be long”, Castro said.

The third round already was scheduled to start late because of morning storms in the forecast, which pounded Crooked Stick and delayed that time by 1ᄑ hours.

The Australian was leading the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average going into the BMW Championship. “Unfortunately, missed a few, but that’s the way golf goes”.

The 30-man Tour Championship, which carries a $10m (£7.54m) prize for the victor, is in Atlanta on 22-25 September.
