Marlins players gather at park to grieve death of Fernandez

Adding to the absence of the pitcher, video boards at an empty Marlins Park broadcast a large 16 – Fernandez’s jersey number – along with his name.

As previously reported, the Coast Guard found Fernandez and two pals in an overturned boat in Miami Beach, Florida, at about 3:30 a.m. local time.

The Commission’s Lorenzo Veloz said the boat was upside down. The divers went into the water and found two people inside the boat and one in the water on the south side of the jetty, officials said. An autopsy will determine if any drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.

None of the three on the boat were wearing their life vests.

“Our thoughts and prayer are with his family at this very hard time”, the statement read.

Sox manager Robin Ventura said the team received the news as they were making their way to the ballpark for Sunday’s game against the Indians.

What people remember Fernandez for the most isn’t his arrival in the US or learning customs, but with the effervescent joy in which he played the game. In Fernandez’s telling, it would take four attempts for he and his family to finally be able to successfully flee the impoverished island prison run by the Castro brothers since 1959. The Florida Panthers released a statement reading, “The Florida Panthers players, staff, and entire organization extend their most honest condolences to the family of Jose Fernandez and the Miami Marlins organization”.

The boat carrying Fernandez and two others was traveling at a high speed when it slammed into rocks, authorities said.

The Marlins’ game against the Atlanta Braves scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Miami was cancelled. “Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who at just 24, established himself as one of the game’s biggest and brightest stars”.

Injuries spoiled his 2014 and 2015 season but, make no mistake, this Jose was The Special One of baseball, and it is a genuine tragedy that we will now never know just how many honours and awards Fernandez would have won.

Fernandez posted a photo on Instagram of his girlfriend, Carla Mendoza, appearing to be pregnant last week.

He was pitching’s answer to Mike Trout and Bryce Harper: A player who debuted at 20, was an All-Star two months later, National League Rookie of the Year two months after that.

“I’m so glad you came into my life”.

“This is a kid that would go and play dominoes at my parents’ house”, Perez said. The native of Santa Clara, Cuba became a USA citizen a year ago and was enormously popular in Miami.

“We’re not robots. We’re humans and we feel”, third baseman Martin Prado said. We’ve got to discuss that later.
