Peterson will have surgery Thursday morning to fix the torn meniscus, the team announced Wednesday.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (28) smiles prior to the game against the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“Adrian Peterson had a successful lateral meniscus fix this morning”, the team said.

Peterson had an MRI that revealed a torn meniscus and had been waiting to hear back from Dr James Andrews, who performed extensive surgery on his knee in 2011, before making a decision.

Remember when the Minnesota Vikings’ offense and their hopes to be a top NFC contender this season were all about Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson?

The Week 3 matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers features two teams that are defensively sound.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he doesn’t know how long Peterson will be out, but acknowledged he “would guess” it’s for months rather than weeks. “He’s growing up. He’s talking a lot more”, Zimmer said.

Either way, it appears Peterson will miss at least three or four months.

The Vikings announced that his surgery was successful, and that the team has not used their “designated-to-return” option on a player yet, leaving the window open for a potential Peterson return late in the regular season. Let’s also not forget that the Vikings have so much faith in McKinnon they went out and snagged Ronnie Hillman off the street. The rookie had a breakout game Sunday, scoring two touchdowns in a 25-20 loss to the Ravens.

The Minnesota Vikings are now running wild with guessing – educated and otherwise – about where the team will be going moving forward in light of the devastating injuries to Teddy Bridgewater, Adrian Peterson, Matt Kalil and Sharrif Floyd. It’s not any fun to talk about, but if they’re going to do it then next year would be the time.

Quarterback Andrew Luck is always at the top of the list when he’s on the injury report.

Regardless of the approximate length of time Peterson is out, there is real doubt about whether he’ll return to play in 2016. “I would think throwing a ball at National Football League quarterback-caliber would take at least the same amount of healing that it would take me to do a pushup. Most people would say a Grade 2 AC (sprain) is a four-to-six week injury”. Even when Garoppolo gets healthy, he might not take another snap with Brady back in the fold.
