Ryan, Falcons starters sharp early in 30-22 loss to Jets

This past week it was announced that last year’s starter, O’day Aboushi has been suspended for one game of the upcoming season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Facing a Jets defense should be a nice challenge in this second week.

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com writes that “the plan” is for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to play “most of the first half” versus the Falcons on Friday night.

The Jets will be out on the practice fields again Wednesday for their final open practice before Friday night’s preseason game against the Falcons at MetLife Stadium. Starting quarterback Matt Ryan completed 6 of 6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. On the Falcons’ second play from scrimmage, Quinton Coples was caught out on coverage on Atlanta fullback Michael Ford, who sprinted away from the linebacker for a 60-yard gain. It appeared to be the result of a miscommunication between cornerbacks Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine. The Falcons had two consecutive three-and-outs following their back-to-back scoring drives.

There’s little doubt the Jets offense will be a mess once the starters check out.

Fitzpatrick, who played just one series last week, finished 13 of 19 for 118 yards before being replaced by Bryce Petty late in the first half. Walter Powell and Brandon Marshall combined for three receptions for 25 yards while Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory combined for 70 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Adding to their struggles, the Jets picked up 10 penalties in the first half for 70 yards. They’re favored by a point in this one against an Atlanta team that scored 31 points in their opening win over the Tennessee Titans. Williams sacked backup quarterback T.J. Yates for a safety in the second quarter to put the Jets on the board at 14-2. “He controls the game, he’s a great game manager and we just had to be out there with him to feel him out”. The past few years, there’s been less of an emphasis on tackling in training camp so the poor tackling display isn’t much of a surprise, but this still needs to be addressed. Now you have to spend .99 for its Game Pass product, which allows you not only to watch preseason games but will also give you replays of regular season games, including the all 22 coaches’ film. He connected with DeVier Posey for a 13-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
