But he also leaves behind memories of a gentle giant. Arnold always had my back, and I had his. Peterson was charged with following Palmer from the moment he stepped onto the golf course to the moment he stepped off it. I Love you as did everyone.
Arnold Palmer, one of golf’s greatest players whose enormous popularity drew a legion of fans known as “Arnie’s Army” and helped propel the game as television was coming of age, died on Sunday at the age 87 due to heart complications, his agent said.
And the rest of us could enjoy one. This dazzling guy who made a once-quiet game exciting. “They were as true-blue as the sky over Latrobe, Pennsylvania”.
“Arnold Palmer Lenny. You’re going to Arnold Palmer Lenny”, Marge Simpson said. “He’s the one who basically brought it to the forefront on TV”. It was a country club sport, but he ushered in the television era by capturing audiences all around the country with his aggressive style and boyish charm.
“Golf was coming on, it wasn’t anywhere near the magnitude that it is today”.
“We are deeply saddened to hear reports that Arnold Palmer has passed away”.
The World Golf Hall of Famer helped build more than 300 golf courses, led fundraising efforts for the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women, and he was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2004.
Palmer was never shy of offering his opinion on Woods’ recent woes, with injury and a loss of form seeing him slump to 754th in the world having not played for over a year.
And then there’s the drink.
A few minutes later, Palmer excused himself and I hurriedly approached my dad, flushed with excitement. “He was the man who basically invented the concept of sports representation in the media and made a fortune doing it”, Dodson said.
He never won golf’s fourth major, the PGA Championships, where he finished runner-up on three occasions. They followed the dashing figure with the all-out swing around the tour, hailing him with what his biographer James Dodson called “mythic America joy”.
Palmer has a diehard fan base from the late 50s and 60s earning a name the moniker “Arnie’s Army”.
But his following among America’s military was in part a function of the history of the Master’s. Soldiers in uniform could attend the event for free. “He made me feel like the most important person in the room”. He’d won the championship in 1960 with a mythic final-round charge at Cherry Hills, and he’d lost it in equally spectacular fashion, with a final-round meltdown in ’66.
Golf great Arnold Palmer died in the USA on Sept 25.
