East Lake course getting the best of players at The Tour Championship

He only has to win or finish second alone in the Tour Championship to win the cup.

Why would you want it to end?

Johnson seeks to become the first player atop the FedEx Cup points standings entering the Tour Championship to win the tournament since Tiger Woods in the inaugural FedEx Cup playoffs in 2007.

Dustin Johnson, who had a four-shot lead at one point on Saturday, came back to the field and will start the final round tied with Kevin Chappell in the final event of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the East Lake Golf Course. “Ryder Cup, first tee here, any tournament”.

With all the subtext of a Russian novel, each would-be champion set out with his own unique baggage. I played such a great round today and kind of left everything out there.

“I played really well this week and I feel like my game is coming together at the right time”. The scenario hasn’t happened.

“It’s hard to get a lot of close birdie chances is what I would say on this golf course”.

But Scott struggled on a rollercoaster Saturday in Atlanta, eventually carding a second straight round of 1-over 71 to be reeling at that mark and in a share of 14th with one day to play. USA captain Davis Love III has one more wild-card selection to make after the Tour Championship. He declined, citing the need for some R&R after playing eight of nine weeks.

“It’s very fortunate it didn’t cost Dustin a major championship”.

Chappell, a runner-up three times this season who has never won on the PGA Tour, has made only one bogey in 54 holes this week, a show of consistency, discipline and a few good breaks when he does miss the fairway. He earned a total of $11.53 million on Sunday, including $1.53 million for the Tour Championship.

“I knew I needed to do something”.

Dustin Johnson made one mistake that suddenly put some intrigue into the final day of the PGA Tour season – the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. That’s disappointing because I started in such great position in the FedEx, but lots of positives to take from this year, and lots of good ideas to work on the next year.

He finished with a flourish with birdie on the last for 64, although he could have won the tournament there and then when his eagle putt just lipped out.

Chappell had a two-shot lead with two holes to play when he made bogey on the 17th hole – only his third of the week at East Lake – and Moore birdied it in the group ahead of him. He is 2 shots back of Johnson and Kevin Chappell, in a third-place tie with Ryan Moore.

Johnson still has control of the $10 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup.

The final selection was kept until after the Tour Championship to avoid the sort of situation which occurred in 2014, when Billy Horschel won the BMW Championship and Tour Championship to claim the overall FedEx Cup title, but only after Tom Watson’s team for Gleneagles had been finalised.

Moore went out in 31 until he was slowed by a pair of bogeys, though very much in the mix just two shots out of the lead.

Johnson gave up his grip on both with an implosion on Sunday. Chappell was eliminated after making a par. McIlroy had other ideas.

“I’ve made it no secret that it’s one of the last things I feel like I had left on my golf CV, and I made it a big goal of mine to win it”, McIlroy said. “Obviously, I need to finish off the weekend, and we’ll see what happens”.

Instead, Moore was still focused on the chain of events that wrapped up the 2015-16 Tour season.
