They still need 229 wickets to overhaul India’s target.

India’s Ravichandran Ashwin celebrates after dismissing South Africa’s Dean Elgar (not pictured) during the second day of their first cricket test match, in Mohali, India, November 6, 2015.
Earlier in the day, unbeaten fifties from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja were crucial in India putting up a total of 377 for five in the second innings before the declaration came after 107.2 overs.
Rather predictably, Kane Williamson attacked with spin from both ends when India resumed on 159 for one and the slow bowlers, thriving on a fourth day surface, did not let the New Zealand skipper down.
Luke Ronchi (38) and Mitchell Santner (eight) will return on Monday hoping to resist India’s victory march in the first match of the three-Test series.
Here’s a recap of the key moments from Day 4 of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at Green Park, Kanpur.
New Zealand then collapsed in the afternoon session as Santner edged Ashwin’s first ball after the interval behind for 32 and Jadeja’s 34th over brought three wickets.
Martin Guptill was unlucky to be caught at silly point for a duck after slog-sweeping a delivery into his boot, but Tom Latham (2) could have few complaints about being trapped in front by Ashwin. The Indians appealed for a catch off Jadeja, after the batsman got a bottom edge and the ball deflected off his foot to KL Rahul at short-leg.
The visitors continued to slip further as Ross Taylor was run out for 17 after Umesh Yadav’s throw from deep mid-wicket hit the stumps at the non-strikers end, with replays showing Taylor’s bat was beyond the crease line but not grounded.
Earlier, the hosts, on resumption, had added 27 runs in seven overs in the morning session.
Santner completed his fifty but was then served a almost unplayable ball from Ashwin, which pitched way outside the leg-stump, turned and bounced viciously to kiss the shoulder of the bat and nestled in Rohit Sharma’s waiting hands at silly point.
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin (R) appeals unsuccessfully for LBW for the wicket of New Zealand’s Ross Taylor during the fourth day of the first Test match between India and New Zealand at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on 25 September 25.

2nd Ashwin’s distinction of taking 200 wickets in 37 Tests is the second fastest by a bowler in Tests next only to Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett (37). Taylor was playing back. Penny and penny get many, they say. Ashwin, coming over the wicket to the left-hander, pitched the ball way wide of the leg-stump.
