Jane Pauley on Sunday was named to replace the retiring Charles Osgood as anchor of “CBS Sunday Morning”.

The bow-tied Osgood told viewers at the end of his last telecast after 22 years that Pauley would replace him. She spent 13 years on the broadcast, and a decade as the anchor of Dateline NBC, starting in 1992.
She became a CBS contributor two years ago and has filled in for Osgood on Sunday Morning and for Scott Pelley on the CBS Evening News.
In a statement released a few minutes after the show ended, Pauley said: “Charles Osgood set the standard for CBS SUNDAY MORNING”, Pauley said.
“Pauley, 65, will become only the third host in the show’s history, following Osgood, 83, who’s retiring after 22 years on the show (and 45 at CBS News) and will take over on October 9”, USA Today reports.
Stories she’s worked on for “Sunday Morning” include a profile of Hillary Clinton, a report on educators who lived through the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting and are trying to change gun laws, and an interview with David Letterman when he left late-night TV.
An experienced journalist known as a gifted writer, Osgood has earned many top broadcasting awards, including the Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award from Arizona State University, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award.
“Jane Pauley is the ideal host for the most wide-ranging news program on American culture, our beloved CBS Sunday Morning broadcast”, said CBS News President David Rhodes. CBS will devote most of the broadcast this Sunday to honoring his career.
Pauley will be only the third host of the program since its 1979 start with Charles Kuralt.

Sunday’s edition of the program, Osgood’s last, offered an expanded tribute to the anchor and feature reporter, including clips from Today, Good Morning America and CBS This Morning anchors echoing Osgood’s familiar sign-off: “See you on the radio”. It has been widely anticipated that she would be his successor as permanent anchor. She is married to “Doonesbury” cartoonist Gary Trudeau, whom she met through Brokaw. And now that we know it’s Jane, we couldn’t be more thrilled!
